new guy saying hi

Post  Tom75 on Tue Jun 01, 2010 6:44 pm

Hi. My name is Tom. Brand new to the sport. Have been looking into different types of gameplay. Woodsball seems to be the best one since I am looking for a combat type of game. I'm 35, spent 8 years in the miltary and have been employed by the RI Dept of Corrections for 10 years. Look forward to gleaning any info I can.

Welcome to the forum, poke around, there is a lot of information here.
Feel free to PM The General or myself with any questions, or post them here.

How did you find us?

We are a very diverse group, with players from 15 to 60.

Thanks for the welcome. I found you guys by tooling around the web. A friend of mine introduced me to the sport a month ago. Been looking for an organization that interested me since then.

Depends on what you are looking for... if range and rate of fire is your thing then i'd aim for a flatline barrel system, a response trigger and a cyclone feed... then you have a marker that will trade fire with the best of them.

My first gun was a 98 Platinum, and that's exactly the route I went. The only other accessory I would consider is a stock, but that really is a matter of preference. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the advice. It is greatly appreciated. Would also like some suggestions for a quality paintball brand at a decent price. Also, what kind of time commitment is expected of members?

As far as paint goes, stay away from the WalMart brands, and you'll be fine. The WalMart paint sits too long, and develops dimples which greatly effect your accuracy. The shells also tend to be so thick that they don't break on impact, and bounce off the target. Walk into any local paintball shop (I recommend Capital Paintball in Coventry, but you may have something closer.), and they should be able to tell you what they have in stock, and which would be best for woodsball. Generally speaking, a "tourney grade" paint will actually break too easily on small branches in the woods, so just because it costs more, doesn't mean it's best for you. I recommend Weapons Grade (it's a brand, not an actual grade). It's what I have been using, and I have no complaints. I also tend to play with pump action markers a lot, and the Weapons Grade tends to be a slightly larger bore size than most modern paintballs, which stops my one and only shot from rolling out of the barrel. Smile

We are recreational players, being a member of SCAR is a fancy way of saying "invited guest", so my son (Evil Jr) is correct, there are no requirements. We have some guys that turn out for every game, some only come for the scenario games, and others we may see once or twice a season.

Check out the archives and you can see what we do differently than most woodsball/rec players. Our scenario games are an ongoing story, with game outcomes determining the direction the story goes.

Thanks Prowler. So glad you let me know about the Walmart ammo. Was actually going to buy some from there tomorrow. I'll be sure to get the weapons grade now. I think that the continuing story line is awesome. I checked out the Facebook pics of your opening day. Looks like a good time is had. Hope to get an invite to one of the events sometime. Thanks again for the info. It's really helpful. Sure I'll have plenty more questions to ask.

When it comes to buying a barrel, do I have to buy a Tippmannmade barrel to fit my Tippmann? Or can I buy from a different manufacturer? If so, any recommendations?

So long as it is threaded for the weapon you should be good... threads are different for not only different brands of guns but also different models of the same brand (ie an A5 barrel is different that a 98 barrel.)

We have games every two weeks on Saturdays and shoot for a 10am start (and very often miss).
We play until people run out of air/paint/energy, generally around 4pm.

The entire S.C.A.R. 2010 season has been scheduled.

What follows is the official S.C.A.R. Paintball 2010 Schedule:

Apr 3, 2010 - The S.C.A.R. 2010 season begins with tactical training.
Apr 17, 2010 - Operation Liberation Scenario Game
May 1, 2010 - Tactical Training
May 15, 2010 - Operation Extraction Scenario Game
May 29, 2010 - Tactical Training
Jun 12, 2010 - Operation Vendetta Scenario Game
Jun 26, 2010 - Tactical Training
Jul 10, 2010 - Scenario Game
Jul 16, 17 & 18, 2010 - Invasion of Normandy, SKIRMISH, PA
Jul 24, 2010 - Tactical Training
Aug 7, 2010 - Scenario Game
Aug 21, 2010 - Tactical Training
Sep 4, 2010 - Scenario Game
Sep 18, 2010 - Tactical Training
Oct 2, 2010 - Scenario Game
Oct 16, 2010 - Tactical Training
Oct 30, 2010 - Scenario Game
Nov 13, 2010 - Tactical Training
Nov 27, 2010 - Scenario Game

The Scenario games are our storyline games. They are generally long games, with set recycle times and locations to keep people playing, although the rules vary game to game. We provide each team with a team printout that reveals objectives, time limits and recycle rules that are relevant to the scenario. These games also tend to attract our largest turnouts (20-30 people).

The "Tactical Training" games are short game formats. Generally single elimination, no recycle games based on the games we started out playing 10 years ago. Patrol and Ambush, Kill the VIP, Opposing Patrols (meeting engagements), Attack and Defend, Center Flag Capture the Flag, and so on.

As you can see, we don't have true practices or matches. What we do have is a good time. Smile
Everyone that plays with us was brought on board by another of us, so we are a pretty laid back group.

Laidback is exactly what I'm looking for. Seems that many combat-sim teams are pretty militant. Enjoy playing, but not enough to commit to weekly meetings and such. You guys definately have your act together. Seem like an easy going group.

So, if We were to offer you an opportunity to come out for a game, what date looks best for you on that list?

when you're buying ask the seller if it will fit your gun. If you buying online it should say somewhere what guns the barrel is compatible with.
